Tours and activities on Durmitor

Durmitor is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage site — Montenegro's most famous mountain massif. From the base town of Žabljak you can reach every activity: hiking to Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m), loop trails around Black Lake, jeep tours across the plateau and rafting through the Tara Canyon.

The main hiking season is June–October; in winter the park works as a ski resort (Savin Kuk). Most local agencies have guides from Žabljak who work exclusively on Durmitor and know the terrain in detail.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Durmitor and Žabljak?

Žabljak is the base town inside Durmitor National Park — almost every tour on Durmitor starts from Žabljak. When choosing a tour, focus on the content (hiking, jeep, rafting); the starting point is Žabljak either way.

Do I need to pay to enter Durmitor National Park?

Yes. The daily park ticket is small (€3), charged at the entrances to the main zones (Black Lake, hiking areas). Most organized tours include the ticket in the price.

Is Bobotov Kuk suitable for beginners?

Not for complete beginners. The full-day program (8–10 hours, ~18 km, 1,100 m of elevation gain) requires good fitness and basic mountain experience. Easier alternatives: Crveni Vrh, Prutaš, and the loop around Black Lake.
