Tours and activities in Žabljak

Žabljak is Montenegro's main mountain town and the base for everything on Durmitor. Hiking programs leave Žabljak for Bobotov Kuk (the highest accessible peak, 2,523 m), Sušica Canyon, Black Lake and Prutaš, plus jeep tours across the plateau and Tara rafting (about 30 min away).

The main season is June–October; in winter (December–March) Žabljak runs as a ski resort (Savin Kuk — small but authentic). Most local agencies are family businesses with guides who are from Žabljak and know the terrain in detail.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the climb to Bobotov Kuk?

A full-day program — 8–10 continuous hours (over 18 km total, 1,100 m of elevation gain). It starts from Sedlo near Žabljak. Experienced hikers in good shape will manage it, but it's not for beginners.

Can I go Tara rafting directly from Žabljak?

Yes. Most rafting agencies pick participants up from their accommodation in Žabljak and drive 30 min to the start point (Splavište or Brštanovica).

How long does it take to walk around Black Lake?

The simple loop around the lake is 3.5 km, about 60 minutes of easy walking. Suitable for all ages, accessible year-round except in deep snow.

What can I do in Žabljak in winter?

Skiing on Savin Kuk, snowshoe tours, sledding, cross-country skiing, and photographing the frozen Black Lake. Žabljak is on average the coldest inhabited place in Montenegro — bring winter gear.

Can I reach Žabljak without a car?

Yes, there are bus lines from Podgorica (4h) and Pljevlja. Most local agencies arrange transfers from the coast (Budva, Kotor) for groups and multi-day programs.
