Bedem Fortress

Kličevo, Nikšić municipality

A multi-layered fortification with a history of more than a millennium — from late antiquity, through the medieval and Ottoman layers, to the present day. A symbol of Nikšić's historical identity.

Bedem Fortress

About the site

Bedem Fortress stands on Trebjesa hill, in the historical core of Nikšić, as a stone witness to the centuries this town has passed through. The site has a long history — from a late-antique Roman stronghold, through the medieval period when the town was called Onogošt, to the Ottoman walls raised in the early 18th century that today most strikingly define the fortress's silhouette.

The fortress has not been reconstructed to the level of a museum building; it stands as an authentic historical site — stone walls, the remains of towers and access paths give a real sense of Balkan military architecture across different eras.

The view from the fortress opens up a perspective of the entire Nikšić plain, and the location suits both walkers and passing travellers — it lies right next to the town center.
