Tsar's Bridge

About the site

Tsar's Bridge is one of the most striking examples of stone bridge-building in Montenegro. It was built in 1894 with financial support from Russia and named after the Russian Tsar Alexander III. The bridge stretches 269 meters and has 18 stone arches spanning the Zeta river. It was designed by the architect Josip Slade.

The bridge's location — on the route towards Ostrog Monastery — gives it a dual role. Historically, it connected two parts of Montenegro on a key thoroughfare. Today it is one of the most beloved photo stops for travellers heading to Ostrog.

The bridge looks its best in the late afternoon, when the sun reflects in the Zeta and the rows of stone arches cast long shadows. Access is free at any time of year.

  • 18 stone arches in a row — the most impressive photo angle
